We have just recently spent over $50,000.00 on upgrading our property, and even thouth there have been numerous complaints forwarded since 2005, nothing has been done. Yes, we have had had HRM folks come and take pictures, etc. at one point, they even posted a notice -time limited- to have something done, but then nothing after that. This property is a disgusting mess with several years of old bagged leaves, fallen down trees, garbage, etc. What is wrong with this picture? Does the city not care, or are we just being ignored? Most of the homes in our area are being bought and upgraded and it could be a wonderful neighbourhood. One example, there is a pile of crusher dust, covered with a plastic wrap, concrete blocks falling over, a fence at the side and back which is totally rotted and falling over, I could go on, but feel helpless at this point. Throughout the ordeal HRM staff were rigid, not helpful and incredibly heavy handed, it was the absolute worst treatment I have ever received by a government dept. I work in government and they made me embarrassed for all civil servants. I would be more than happy to share my experiences.

I was unable to complete the work they expected us to do in the alotted time so they did the work and billed us nearly $3000. Luckily our title insurance covered the cost. I definately feel the anonymous complaints are coming from contractors looking for work. An overhaul of the bylaw is past due. The emphasis should be more strongly on the "dangerous" side rather than "unsightly". A bit of peeling paint shouldn't be enough to get someone a citation.

Anonymous complaints should not be accepted as there is no possibility of confirming motive.
Our bylaws should promote harmony in our communities, not distrust and retribution.
