The flats were designed as bachelor apartments, with two public rooms to the front, the gentleman's bedroom at the rear, and a staff bedroom next to it. There were marble mantlepieces in all rooms except the last. Clothes were dried on window and ceiling pulleys. Shafts in scullery and toilet gave ventilation. Many flats retain these features.

Most worrying is the break up of family flats into high density HMO units. Gillespie Crescent is still a very attractive residential area and also a rare example of city centre Crescent design. On both counts steps should be taken to protect it against further inappropriate development.

Have you noticed that in Gillespie Crescent flats on either side of a stair are not mirror image in plan ? I know nowhere else in Edinburgh that does this. This must have been done so that the rythmn of bay-window-bay-window gives the outside a more harmonious appearance. Contrast this with the bay-window-window-bay of standard Marchmont tenements!

A balanced mix of different types of householders is to be welcomed, as long as it does with sensitivity to the historical uniqueness of this street and the integrity of its buildings.
