Jennifer Joslin is a good teacher, and I don't see the point in removing the program if it leaves students with no other options than Spanish. It's bad enough that the few students who did not like her class end up promoting younger students not to take the class, but German itself also has its benefits globally. German is one of the big commerce languages and one that many businessmen have learned in Europe for international transactions. Like so, German can be a valuable language to learn for situations like these. For example, take Taylor Burke. Taking German at RFHS, he then received a scholarship for post-secondary education in Germany. Before he left, he had asked me if there was a way to prevent the administrators from removing the program, because if that were to happen, no one would be able to have the opportunity that he had. I hope what I have said is considered on this issue.

If there is disinterest in the subject perhaps we should look at why the school hasn't done anything to help German class have more recognition. There was about 3 classrooms given to Spanish classes because Spanish has more students enrolled, that's a fact. But who is enrolling those students? The administration. I know there is more to this situation then meets the eye. But it can't be that RFHS is the only school that consistently has students who would rather not "challenge" themselves with a different language.

If the reason the for the potential of the program being discontinued is because Rockport is a 'border town's to force students to learn Spanish then that is asinine. For the simple fact the 'Spanish' spoken around the area is not the Spanish taught in school; which is why so many student who are fluent in 'Spanish' spoken around the area struggle in the class. If a student wishes to learn the language that is spoken around them daily all they have to do is ask a fellow student that most likely is fluent in what is know as 'tex-mex'. It's what many students, including myself, that I attended school with did. If the reason is to save money just come out and say it, don't mask it with a political statement as if doing this brings the community closer together saying everyone will know English and/or Spanish.

Not being able to choose what foreign language one takes limits them exponentially. By making German unavailable, an added barrier to study of Germanic languages is created. The same principle would apply if the Spanish courses were in jeopardy, and as such, it is unfair to the students and prospective students of ACISD to have barriers placed on their education.

Little did I know, I was going to use the language a lot soon after I arrived to my university to play college ball. Being able to communicate with my German teammates helped them feel more comfortable here in the states and made me feel proud I could understand a third language. Not only has German helped me tear down the language barrier with my teammates, but has also established long term friendships with mates around the world.
