My ex took off when my daughter was a year old and left me to primarily take care of her. Because I wasn't married to her and was ignorant of the law I had no way of stopping her when she decided to take my daughter 5 hours away 3 years later. I am currently fighting an uphill and seemingly hopeless battle for rights that I should have had at my daughters birth. My daughter is now in a dangerous situation that I unfortunately cannot prove enough to satisfy the court. It's not only fathers like me who suffer because women are automatically handed all the rights, its children like my poor daughter who was yanked away from everyone and everything she knew. I have no doubt she will suffer psychological damage from this as her mother has put it in her head that I have abandoned her. The "tender years doctrine" was abandoned years ago so why are us fit fathers powerless when it comes to protecting our children just because we decided not to marry an unfit mother?

I have raised my daughter practically by myself since her mother left when she was a year old. I am the only stable thing my little one has ever had. Shortly before my daughter turned 4 her mother (who had moved 4 1/2 hours away) decided she was finally ready to be a full time mom and came to get my daughter for no other reason than she wanted her to live with her and her drug dealer boyfriend. Because I never married her I was powerless to stop it despite being my daughter's primary caregiver for so long. I hired an attorney and have sold nearly everything I own to fight an uphill battle for albout a year now. I have had many false allegations brought against me and have aged more in the past year than I had in the previous 5 due to stress and sleepless nights worrying about my daughter. But the worst part is how its affected her. She had never been away from me for more than a couple days and this has caused her many emotional problems as well as what I would describe as separation anxiety. fathers like me should be given 50% instead of having to spend thousands just to prove we are fit.
