Palatka's Downtown Business District (bounded by St Johns River to the east, 11th Street to the west, Main Street to the north and Oak Street to the south) is the heart and soul of the City. Although the adjacent residential neighborhoods to the north and south of the district are both listed on the National and Local Register of Historic Places, the Downtown Business District is not.
Designation on the National and Local Historic Register would create:
An opportunity to apply for Historic Tax Credits.
A level of protection for contributing historic structures.
An improvement in Downtown Palatka's overall appearance creating local pride and a welcoming appearance for visitors.
An ability to promote Palatka as a historic destination.
