Research conducted by Joy Lewis and Tess Shelton in 2017 confirmed that MTSU is neglecting to provide adequate access to menstrual products (i.e., pads and tampons). In doing so, MTSU is failing to meet the needs of more than half of its students and employees. Of the 90 buildings on campus, there are only 8 locations where students and employees can obtain menstrual products. At those locations, menstrual products are sold at up to 4 times market price, and options are severely limited (notably, pads are not available at any POD). We call on MTSU’s administration to address the inaccessibility of menstrual products on our campus by meeting the demands listed below in our petition. Contact tns3z@mtmail.mtsu.edu for a copy of the afforementioned research.
We, as MTSU students and employees, insist that the MTSU Student Government Association (SGA) earmark annual funds to provide pads and tampons at no-cost
1) in at least one women’s restroom in every building on campus, and
2) in at least one all-gender/family/ single-person restroom in buildings where such exist.
Additionally, we insist that SGA pass a resolution to grant Generation Action at MTSU and associated organizations permission to place pads and tampons in any restroom on campus.
