We all want to have a positive impact on the world as we graduate and move forward with the next chapter of our lives. Taking the 1% pledge allows each of us to do this, regardless of the career we choose. The organization One For The World provides a list of 18 trusted charities that fight for neglected causes, ensures your donation is managed to produce the maximum benefit, and creates tangible change in the world. Let’s make our Penn Class of 2017 the first to create a new norm of giving. You can directly make an impact and save the lives of others by pledging to donate 1% of your income at 1fortheworld.org.
Learn more about a few of One for the World’s recommended charities:
~Living Goods: Trains and employs local people, the majority of whom are women, to sell goods and life-saving medical supplies at competitive prices. Randomized controlled trials have proven the direct impact that this program has had on decreasing child mortality in these communities.
~Against Malaria Foundation: Provides bed nets to prevent malaria infections and reduce child mortality. 100% of donations go towards paying for the purchase, distribution, and monitoring of nets. Each net costs only $4.85, including all distribution and monitoring costs, and protects two people for 3-4 years on average.
~Possible: Gives access to free and cost-effective health care services to Nepal’s rural poor by combining the best of private, public, and philanthropic models. They have a very strong focus on providing cost effective care, operating at an average cost of only $36 per patient.
How does OFTW work?
OFTW's online platform allows you to choose the charities to which you want to donate, and the amount of money that you wish to donate. Reports are sent regarding the impact of your donation, and you can cancel or change your donation at any time.
A little intimidated by giving 1% of your income?
The idea of pledging 1% may be scary at first, but when you step back and look at it from another angle, it takes on a new light. Earn $100 and donate $1 to tangibly improving the lives of others. Work a 50-hour week and donate a half hour of that time to helping others in a far less fortunate position. In addition, the OFTW website platform allows you to input any dollar amount. Getting into the habit of donating early in life has proven benefits, so if you are nervous about making the commitment, you can always put in a lower contribution that can be increased later.
We can create change.
Penn students are in an incredibly powerful position. 1% of the average Penn student’s future income for just one year, when donated to these organizations, could protect 350 people from malaria for three to four years, provide safe drinking water for 650 people for a year, or treat 600 children for parasitic worms. That’s a massive positive impact that each one of us has the potential to make.
