Democracy Oshawa is demanding that the City of Oshawa Council respect the voters by calling for a by election for the recent vacancy on Oshawa Council by the death of a Regional/City councilor. That they have a plan in place for any further vacancies that cannot be tampered with and eliminates favouritism. We ask that a by-election be called, or in times of fiscal issues or shorter time constraints that the first runner up for the office vacated in the previous general election be promoted to fill the previous vacancy.
What the citizens of this city need is a City Hall that respects democracy and the voters that put them there and NOT appoint just someone of their choosing. Cronyism or nepotism is a stain on how City Hall operates, and it should never be an option.
We the Undersigned petition the City of Oshawa to hear our request.
In light of the recent and tragic passing of Regional Councillor Diamond, we ask Council to honour democracy; there should be a by-election to fill her seat; but we understand cost concerns. Therefore, we ask them to honour the votes of the first runner up to replace Regional Councillor Diamond in the 2014 Civic election. On Monday, October 27, 2014, the residents of Oshawa declared their choice and the first runner up should be named to fill the open position.
Council needs to remember their 10 votes do not supersede the voting public. An elevation of others to the seat on council without paying respect to the electorate is a travesty and speaks of cronyism.
