As a survivor of ritual sexual abuse I'm aware of the lack of resources available to survivors, many having to pay for expensive private therapy to help them cope and heal. Those who are unable to fund private therapy are left to manage with the horror of their past unguided.
Left unaddressed the wounds of sexual abuse can not only destroy the life of the victim but also have a ripple effect on society as it has been found that almost a third of prisoners experienced abuse as a child.
Many survivors resort to unhealthy ways of coping with their past, such as stealing, drinking, taking drugs, developing eating disorders and self-harming,all of which maybe avoidable with the correct and adequate mental health care available. These unhealthy coping behaviours-as well as criminal responses leading to inprisonment -themselves cost the NHS, the tax payer and the survivor dearly. Therefore wouldn't it make sense for mental health services to be more readily available and better equipped to treat the complex issues many survivors presents with? Saving the survivor and reducing the money required to inprison a victim who's lost their way or treat eating disorders, drug and alcohol addictions due to body distortion and unhealthy coping strategies a victim has been left with?

It is my mission to gather 100,000 signatures so I can present this not only to my local MP Chloe Smith, but also Nicola Blackwood, the minister for public health.

We,the undersigned, call upon the minister for public health,Nicola Blackwood, to address the lack of resources available to survivors of sexual abuse.
