The recent proposal to slaughter 500 kangaroos and their joeys and develop housing at a disused Defence site in Belconnen, Canberra, has highlighted attachment to a population of kangaroos, who have brought much joy and pleasure, in an otherwise rapidly evaporating natural environment.
It has also highlighted the importance of maintaining natural reserves and animals, our connection to nature, and the spiritual and emotional well being that this conection engenders.
TO THE ACT GOVERNMENT FROM THE RESIDENTS OF CANBERRA AND BELCONNEN
We, the undersigned, as residents of Canberra, request that the ACT government consider our plea, to have the now disused Belconnen Naval Transmission Station, and the vacant grasslands that surround it, set aside as a wildlife reserve, with corridors to surrounding reserves, enhancing the migration abilities of its animals.
As residents of this area, we have a great attachment to this land, and the kangaroos that live there, and will feel a great loss, spiritually and emotionally, if the land and the kangaroos were destroyed.
We believe that making this land into a wildlife reserve, would not only enhance our connectedness to nature, so important for our mental and emotional well being, but also create a tourist mecca, bringing much needed income to our state and our community.
