Stop sending animals to their deaths

Argument 1#
"Animal experiments are vital to save lives."
This is completely untrue. Fake organs, computer models and human volunteers can all now be used instead of animals, and these methods have been proved to be more reliable.

Argument 2
"Animal experiments have saved lives before."
While it may be true that animal experiments have saved some lives before, thousands of other people have died as a result of these tests. This is because, although animals are similar to people, no two species are exactly the same. Animals normally respond to the products that are being tested. This means that, while they may be able to survive a certain procedure, it may prove to be fatal when used by humans. When Thalidomide was released, it caused birth defects in the people who used it. However, this did not show up in the animal tests that were done beforehand. Diabetics were also amongst the many people who were let down by animal experiments.

Argument 3#
"The animals that are used in laboratory experiments are looked after well and scientists try hard to minimise to their suffering."
Although some laboratory animals are well-cared for, most are not. Yes, there are laws regarding the use of animals in experiments, but these laws are so weakly-enforced that they might as well not be in place. Most of these laws are designed to protect the scientists who work there so that they cannot be prosecuted for animal cruelty. In a laboratory, animals may be force-fed chemicals, have chemicals dripped into their eyes, cut open, infected with deadly diseases, gassed shot or burned. When they are not being used in sadistic experiments, they are normally kept locked up in tiny cages in rooms that are often dark and pretty bare apart from the animals and their cages and, sometimes, a few storage cupboards and other equipment.

You may think that airlines need to transport animals to laboratories in order to remain open, but the truth is that airline companies such as British Airways, Delta Airlines and Airline China manage to stay in business without transporting animals to laboratories so the companies that do take them there will probably be able to manage if they stop taking animals to their deaths.

We, the undersigned, demand that airlines do their part to help end animal testing by refusing to take animals to laboratories.

We also demand that they stop doing business with companies who experiment on animals.
