Currently Spanish by laws state feeding stray cats is illegal and also neutering them if not via the town halls is also illegal. A cruel and farcical law indeed, as in Benalmadena they do nothing to help stray animals.
Recently a person who feeds a group of stray cats was stopped by Benalmadena police and will have to appear in court. In addition the 10 cats she feeds were neutered by a UK charity - had clipped ears to show they were neutered, but were rounded up in nets and killed.
Benalmadena and other areas are causing gross cruelty trying to inflict death by starvation to innocent stray animals, violating the civil rights of people who want to them and in addition are terrorizing and trying to make criminals out of people who are helping the strays. These strays had also been treated for ringworm and fleas.
We the undersigned call upon the Spanish government and Euro parliament to ban cruel by laws which try to prohibit people feeding stray cats and neutering them.
The actions of Benalmadena recently in killing neutering cats was cruel and unacceptable along with their persecution of people involved with helping strays. This by-law inflicts gross cruelty with intended starvation and also a violation of human rights.
We believe people should not take their tourist trade to Spain until this by-law and these killings and persecution has ended.
