Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has started enforcing an old law about not allowing live aboards greater then 30 calendar days a year. To ensure this they are also not allowing boats to anchor out or have moorings for more then 5 days.
The reason is the State of Georgia has no law allowing them to check for proper insurance or pump outs on boats, and the possibility of a storm sinking possible uninsured boats.
This enforcement will baldy hurt cruisers passing through St. Marys, Georgia, citizens who are using moorings in the rivers for long term storage with local marinas being full, or those who enjoy spending every other weekend on the boat.
We the People, the undersigned citizens of Georgia, do petition the City of St. Marys, The Georgia DNR - Coastal Resources Division, and the Camden County to pass legislation for St. Marys to designate an anchoring area, require boaters using it longer then 5 days to register insurance cards with the city, and if living aboard show proof of pump outs.
We ask the county to implement a similar program for all waterways in the county. We ask the DNR to approve this as it is an important symbol of our local waterfront history and heritage, as well as a valuable resource for businesses and the local economy.
