The State Government's Development Assessment Commission has approved the demolition of the Harris Scarfe building in Grenfell Street.
The developer, Alteman SA, has had a 19 storey office tower approved for the site.
Built in 1922, the Harris Scarfe building is part of Adelaide’s unique architectural heritage and the Grenfell streetscape and Adelaide's last surviving operating department store.

The National Trust says that the building was defined as being of local heritage significance some years ago.
We are concerned that this important building is not listed in the current State and local heritage register and is able to be demolished. What is being done to protect our architectural heritage?
No public consultation has taken place about this decision.
Adelaide City Council has surrendered their planning approval powers on this matter.
Historic areas such as The Rocks, Sydney and Flinders Lane, Melbourne have been saved by public action. We would now not dream of demolishing these areas.
It's important that unions and other concerned community bodies act to halt demolition of historic buildings as part of acting sustainably.
We wish to register our concern at the proposed demolition of the Harris Scarfe building in Grenfell Street.
We call on you to retain the existing 1920s Harris Scarfe building.

Adelaide’s appeal lies in retaining our architecture and NOT becoming another city of characterless glass towers.

We feel strongly that decisions about our heritage should NOT be left up to developers.
