Riviera Maya - Help Save our Marine Ecosystem

This letter is to bring to your attention the anger and distress of the diving community, environmentalists, and NGOs dedicated to conservation and protection of the natural wealth of our region as a result of the the events of Saturday, November 6th of this year, in front of the Porto Real Hotel pier on Avenida Constituyentes, in which 9 bull sharks were captured and removed by a fisherman from the community of Puerto Morelos.

Our protest is based on the fragility of the coral reef ecosystem, where diverse organisms survive, from day to day, the pressures of different social and natural factors. Each species plays an important role in the healthy functioning of this complex environment, and the bull shark, as the predator at the top of the chain, is a key link. Its presence regulates and controls the populations of injured or sick fish, keeping the groups in healthy balance to the benefit of the entire ecosystem. Shark populations in the Mexican Caribbean have been decimated for decades by fishing, and diving professionals in the region have witnessed the decline of sightings of these species, and the general deterioration of reefs in the Mexican Caribbean. The barrier reef that stretches along the entire coast of Quintana Roo, and is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (Internationally Protected Area), attracts thousands of tourists of different nationalities as the main attraction in the most important tourist destination of sun and sand the country. Diving is among the principal activities in the area, with numbers of close to 200,000 divers per year in the Riviera Maya alone, who wish to admire its beauty and the species who inhabit it. In the last two years, a bull shark population was identified near the coast of Playa del Carmen, and dive professionals began to dive at the site to assess, plan and conduct safe dives with tourists. After months of diving, we began to commercialize the dives with success, and prestigious magazines and world-class dive agencies recognized this marvelous experience.This new product has attracted the attention of thousands of tourists and created employment and income not only for foreign and local guides, but also for all of the staff required to support the activity, wherein captains, sailors, and those responsible for the filling and transport of diving tanks all receive the occupational and economic benefits.

In conclusion, we can prove with facts that sharks have more economic and natural value for the area alive, and that the damage caused by fishing for them and other species directly affects the reef and the dive industry that directly or indirectly supports the population of the Riviera Maya. The critical situation in which we find our oceans and the environment in general is not new. We cannot continue making mistakes and irrationally exploiting our marine resources without considering the short and long-term consequences.

Our petition is calling for the protection of these and other species, undertaking an analysis of the commercial value for tourism, and finding the tools to regulate it in the Mexican Caribbean coast.

El presente texto es para dar a conocer la indignación y malestar que la comunidad de buceo, ambientalistas y ONG´s dedicadas a la conservación y protección de la riqueza natural de la región por los hechos ocurridos el sábado 6 de Noviembre del presente año frente al muelle del Hotel Porto Real ubicado en la avenida constituyentes, en el cual fueron capturados y extraídos 9 tiburones toros por el pescador de la comunidad de Puerto Morelos.

Nuestra protesta se sustenta sobre la fragilidad del ecosistema del arrecife de coral, donde diversos organismos día a día sobreviven las presiones que distintos factores sociales y naturales les afectan, en este complejo ambiente cada especie cumple un papel importante en su sano funcionamiento y el tiburón toro como el predador en la cima de la cadena es un eslabón clave, su presencia regula y controla las poblaciones de peces heridos o enfermos manteniendo a los grupos en sano equilibrio en beneficio de todo el ecosistema; las poblaciones de tiburones en el caribe Mexicano han sido diezmadas durante décadas por la pesca y profesionales de buceo en la región somos testigos de la disminución de encuentros con este grupo y del deterioro general de los arrecifes en El Caribe México. La barrera coralina que se extiende a todo lo largo de la costa de Quintana roo y que pertenece al Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano (Zona protegida Internacionalmente) , atrae miles de turistas de diversas nacionalidades como el principal atractivo en el mas importante destino turístico de sol y playa del país, dentro de las actividades principales en la zona esta el buceo con un numero cercano solo en La Riviera Maya a los 200,000 submarinistas al año, quienes desean admirar la belleza y especies que lo habitan. En los últimos 2 años se detecto una población de Tiburones Toro cercanos a la costa de Playa del Carmen y los profesionales de buceo comenzaron a bucear en el sitio para evaluar, planificar y realizar inmersiones seguras con los turistas, después de meses de inmersiones se comenzó a comercializar con éxito y prestigiadas revistas y agencias de buceo a nivel mundial reconocieron la maravillosa experiencia de esta inmersión. Este nuevo producto a atraído la atención de miles de turistas y a abierto trabajo e ingreso no solo para los guías locales y extranjeros, también a todo el personal que se requiere para realizar la actividad donde capitanes, marineros, encargados de recarga y transporte de cilindros de buceo, reciben beneficios laborales y económicos.

En conclusión podemos comprobar con hechos que los tiburones con vida tienen mayor valor económico y natural para la zona y que el daño causado por la pesca de esta y otras especies afecta directamente al arrecife y a la industria de buceo que sustenta directa o indirectamente a la población de la Riviera Maya, no es nuevo la critica situación en la que se encuentra nuestros mares y en general el ambiente, no podemos continuar cometiendo errores o explotando de manera irracional los recursos marinos sin medir las consecuencias que esto implica a corto y largo plazo.

Nuestra petición es exigir la protección de esta y otras especies haciendo un análisis de su valor comercial para el turismo y buscar los instrumentos para reglamentarlo en las costas del Caribe Mexicano.
