The Governor proposed a 4.8 billion budget cut to California’s schools which will severely damage the quality of education in the state.
The students did not create this budget problem, and their progress should not be damaged because of it.
- • 4.8 billion cut is equivalent to:
-taking away $24,000 per classroom
-$800 per-student spending reduction
-laying off over bus drivers, janitors, food services workers, maintenance workers and other educational support workers
-cutting $7.76 million per district
- 35% class size increase
• California dropped from 43rd to 46th in the nation per-student spending. $1,900 per-student less than national average
• A report published in Education Week gave California a D+ in education funding.
• New York has spent 75% more on education than California.
• California already has some of the most overcrowded classrooms and a shortage of support staff (ex: social workers, counselors)
• Budget cuts threaten music, art, and technical education programs
• Student achievement has gone up despite lack of funding. HOWEVER, this progress is not expected to continue if funding is continuously cut.
Governor Schwazenegger has proposed a $4.8 million dollar budget cut to California schools. This cut will severely damage the quality of education children are receiving.
With this budget cut we can expect to lay off more than 107,000 teachers and 137,000 other school personnel. The cut is equal to cutting $7.76 million dollars per school district or taking away $24,000 per classroom.
Many education critics have given California a D+ in funding. The students did not create this budget problem and their progress should not be damaged because of it.
