To the retailers within the Yarraville Village. This Petition of the Yarraville community brings attention to the following issues:
• Australians use about 4 billion lightweight plastic bags every year. Vast amounts of fossil fuels are required to produce these bags, a process which adds to greenhouse emissions.
• Plastic bag refuse is a major threat to our land, waterways and ocean environments, including Stony Creek, Maribyrnong River and Port Phillip Bay.
• Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and has the potential to end up on the marine food chain with devastating consequences. At least 77 species of marine wildlife found in Australian waters are affected by marine litter.
• Eliminating single use plastic bags requires negligible infrastructure and will save clean-up costs, whilst allowing significant savings to retailers.
Help our wonderful village change its bag habits and make it an environmental leader in the inner west.
The undersigned petitioners request that the Yarraville Village Traders put a ban on single use lightweight plastic bags at retail points of sale in the Yarraville Village by the end of February 2013.
