With news breaking tonight 11/1/2008 of Terry Venables possible appointment, I
and all the undersigned disagree with this potential appointment.
Considering in the last 20 years he has been sacked 7 times, and never Qualified a
team to a major championship.
We, the undersigned, herby announce our disappointment with the possible
news of Terry Venables being appointed to the position of Irish soccer manager, as it will lead to further bad results and lack of qualification for major competitions.
Here is the Letter:
Dear Mr. Delaney,
This email is concerning the news this evening, (11/1/2008) that Terry
Venables will be offered the job of the Irish soccer manager, this greatly worries
me if indeed this news is true.
Firstly, the last Trophy he won was 17 seasons ago, when a year after Italia 90,
he has only one other success and this was with Barcelona when he won La
Liga, however he was soon sacked by the club after failing to beat Dundee Utd
over 2 legs (second leg at home) in 1987.
He was appointed Spurs chief executive in 1991 and was sacked in 1993 from
that position due to his business dealings by Alan Sugar.
Later in 1993 despite this conduct hanging over him he was appointed the head
coach of England after their failure to qualify for the World cup in 1994, he
never had to qualify England to a major competition instead he played a bunch
of micky mouse friendlies as warm up games including infamous riot at
Lansdowne Rd game.
He took the team to the Semi-Finals of Euro 96, after drawing with Switzerland,
Beating Scotland and Holland, he also managed to get an undeserved win on
penalties against Spain in the Quarter Finals, then England got Knocked out in
the Semi Finals by Germany.
In 1996 Venables agreed to leave the English post under pressure from the FA
due to his business dealings which also cost him his job at Tottenham Hotspur.
Venables Next Job was with Australia, where he topped the Oceanic qualifying
group, and to qualify for the 1998 tournament they needed to beat Iran over 2
legs, they drew 1-1 in Tehran, and they were 2-0 up at half time at home, and
he managed to blow it and they lost out on qualification. And again he was
sacked.
Venables next role in Football came as chairman of Portsmouth Football Club, he
left the club 11 months later and bottom of Division one.
Venables was again to change jobs and move back to a club he previously
managed Crystal Palace, he lasted in that before falling out with the Chairman,
and only lasted some 10 months in the job, where he left the club almost in
administration and nearly out of business.
Venables was not touched for over 2 years until he was appointed coach to
assist Bryan Robson as manager of Middlesbrough, Venables Left Middlesbrough
because he felt it was too remote a base for his media and business interests
and left after just 6 months at the club.
About 12 months later he was appointed head coach of Leeds Utd, He again
failed to deliver any decent results, and exits from the UEFA cup and the League
cup, and fallings out with key players, he was sacked only 9 months later in
March of 2003.
Again after being out of football for some 2 years, he was appointed assistant
coach to Steve McClaren with England, again he failed to help the team qualify
for the European Championships, despite being put in a group with which the
English Media described as "Easy". Once again he was sacked from the position
only 3 months ago.
So to round up, He has never Qualified a team to a major competition, he has
never left a club or country under good circumstances since his sacking by
Barcelona in 1987(21 years ago) he has been sacked as a manager 7 times
since 1987, this is including a total of 4 years where he took breaks.
He is a failed manager, and appointing him would be bad for Irish soccer. Please
see below for a list of other candidates who are better qualified. Please choose
one of them over Terry Venalbles, as they are all better choices.

Paul Fox
