Did you know that a federal law called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 inadvertently caused the cost of birth control pills for college women to soar? The legislation neglected to include college and university health centers on a list of providers eligible for special discounts from pharmaceutical companies.

This act made the cost of birth control in campus health centers rise by almost 900 percent. According to the American College Health Association, the cost for a pack of birth control pills at a college clinic has gone from an average of $5-$10 a month to $30-$50 a month. This drastic increase in cost has made prescription contraception unaffordable for many college students. While the cost of the original legislation adds up every day for women, Congress has introduced new legislation to restore access to affordable birth control that won't cost taxpayers a single penny.

The Prevention Through Affordable Access Act was introduced by representatives from both parties who agree that access to affordable contraception is the most effective way to prevent unintended pregnancy. Urge your state's congressmen to support the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act!

We, the undersigned, call on the United States Congress to restore access to affordable birth control for college women.
