Every DCPS elementary school student deserves access ti a school counselor. The elementary school years sets the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to become a healthy, competent, and confident learner.
School counseling programs at the elementary level assist staff, parents, and the community create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing students education, prevention and early intervention services, school counselors at the elementary level can help all children achieve academic success.
There is a misconception that because students are younger in elementary school, their problems are smaller. Prevention is a major part of the job of a school counselor. School counselors can help all students deal with day-to-day challenges and distractions to learning.
School counselors work as part of a team to support academic achievement, and enhance interpersonal and social growth, peace making skills and career development. School counselors also lend technical, personal and professional assistance to parents, teachers and administrators.
Give the District of Columbia public elementary school students a chance by rejecting the proposed 2008-09 DCPS school budget which fails to fund school counselor positions in all elementary schools within the District of Columbia.
We the undersigned do not believe it is the intent of the DC City Council to deny our students a school counseling program during these critical times.
We call on Chairman Vincent Gray and members of the DC City Council to reject the current DCPS school budget for school year 2008-09 and support full funding for a full time school counselor in every DCPS elementary school.
