There is a lot of emotion and misinformation surrounding this issue of horse slaughter.
Most horse owners believe that horses are companion and performance animals, not livestock. The United States has never raised horses for human consumption in America.
Slaughter houses have recently been shut down in the U.S., but horses continue to be sold for a few hundred dollars then transported across Canadian or Mexican borders where slaughter continues and is less humane than it was in the U.S.
These bills attempt to stop the transport of American horses, sick, injured or healthy - for slaughter anywhere.
We, the undersigned, support the passage of the following bills or amendments to bills that outlaw the transport of sick, injured, or healthy horses from or out of America for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption domestically or overseas.
The backyard breeding of inept horse owners needs to stop. Horse owners who cannot afford to feed their horses, and who starve them or let them loose in lieu of slaughterhouse availability should be prosecuted for animal cruelty.
We believe taking away the trashcan for seethy horse traders and incompetent horse owners will slow and eventually end the backyard breeding businesses that supply horse slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.
We believe that anyone who cannot afford a dignified end for horses (approximately $250 USD per horse for euthanization and disposal - equal to the average 1 month of boarding; and less than $50 USD if you compost the carcass - equal to the average 1 month per horse feed bill) should not own horses in the first place.
