To construct large buildings in the marshlands along the Gowanus canal, Lightstone Group, the developer of 365 Bond Street, between 2nd and Carroll Streets, has begun pounding what will be more than a thousand steel piles into the earth. The sound resulting from this action is producing noise that reaches decibel levels high enough to harm hearing.
It has not only disrupted those living and working in the area but is also having a negative impact on classroom activity in nearby schools. Elderly residents and small children who are homebound are suffering throughout the day as are local commercial businesses and the numerous home-based professionals who live and work in the neighborhoods surrounding the development site.
We, the undersigned residents who live, work and have children in local schools in the affected area ask for your prompt assistance with the following:
l. Because of the extensive nature of the pile driving required for this project and the harm it imposes within a large, dense urban residential community, we are directing you to have this work stopped immediately and require the developer employ a pile sound-deadening apparatus, commonly called a 'noise shroud' for all remaining pile work on this site and any other that is to take place going forward in the Gowanus marshland.
ll. We request that the pile driving, once shrouded, be restricted to the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM, weekdays only.
