On Friday in VA, a Newport News high school teacher has been placed on leave and is awaiting pending charges due to a discussion she had with her AP Class.
Ms. Lynne Pierce, of Heritage High School, was informing her AP US History class on how America is not paying attention to how the country is celebrating racism and derogatory terms. She specifically stated this: "America celebrates racism without realizing it. We have an NFL team name the Redskins that mocks Native Americans. Fans act as though they have tomahawks. That's like if someone came to Newport News and made a football team, and called them the Newport News Niggers. Both are racist and should not be used!" She later on went and told the class about other terms that were used throughout history to describe other races. With that she included what people from different regions though of others as well.
A student reported her to the Administration Board because she felt "offended." Because of this, Ms. Pierce has been placed on leave and have pending charges. Not in any way did Ms. Pierce tell a student that they were the "N" word. She gave a logical, historical, and educational example of ignored racism in America. The high school is 90% Black so the comparison was appropriate to show students how offensive it is on both side of the spectrum. Ms. Pierce did nothing wrong. She is a history teacher, she cannot be censored for teaching terms and beliefs that people had throughout history.
SInce Ms. Pierce's leave, her classes are being covered by substitutes. These students are falling behind. In an AP setting students should be mature enough to hear words like that when we talk about History. We cannot sugarcoat history.
I would like your help on getting attention to this and see if there is a way you can help restore her name.
