SB1540 requires the State Board of Education to consider, by June 30 2014, the adoption of a history-social science framework. The draft framework includes information about SIkhs in seven distinct areas.
When completed, this will become an important tool which will be used in all California schools to increase awareness and knowledge about Sikhism and its followers.
This will help build a strong foundation of tolerance and respect for other cultures and diversity in our future generations. These are the same values which this great nation stands for and we want to ensure that they become a part of our children’s education.

Dear Governor Brown,
As part of your constituency, I request you to sign SB1540 (Hancock). The bill authorizes the State Board of Education to complete the revised curriculum framework for history-social science for California schools.
The updated framework includes information relative to the role of Sikh Americans and their contribution. A change at this level will help overcome the ignorance in our society which has led to bullying and bias for many. Sikhs have also been subjected to hate crimes and racial profiling in recent times and curriculum related to role of Sikhs will certainly go a long way to alleviate some of the recent concerns.
Children tend to carry the knowledge, concepts, and skills that they acquire at this age throughout their life. This will set as base for other constituencies and help in spreading awareness about Sikhism from the very beginning.
I therefore request you to sign SB1540 and would be highly obliged by your support.
