Alexander Keith's Brewery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada was founded in 1820. Apparently, they no longer use the original recipe for their IPA and over the years, the distinguishable India Pale Ale characteristics have been all but lost. What remains is a pale, hop-starved (<20 IBUs) ale with no discernable citrus, floral, grassy or piney notes. It’s questionable that they can and do call this an IPA.

So why should we care if they call it an IPA? Because we love beer and respect the talent of brewers worldwide. A style as distinctive as an IPA varies by brewer and region, but it should follow certain standards. When a beer as widely distributed as Keith’s IPA does not come close to these standards, it has the ability to portray Canada as a country who doesn’t brew a classic IPA.

Why won’t Keith’s change the name from an IPA? Because of "history"? They use “Nova Scotia Style” in their labeling in the US, which may disturb other Nova Scotian brewers, but at least it distinguishes their beer as being their own unique take on a beer style.

If we sign this petition and jointly advise Labatt Brewing Company/Anheuser-Busch InBev that we think their labeling is inappropriate, perhaps they will listen and change their name.

We, the undersigned, call on Labatt Brewing Company/Anheuser-Busch InBev to change their name from Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale to a name that properly represents their beer (Lager, Ale, Nova Scotia Style Ale...).

We do not believe that Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale is, in fact, an IPA.
