Description/History:
Chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans and gorillas are closely related to humans, sharing up to 99% of our genetic material. They also share many of our characteristics, including empathy, intelligence, family ties, long childhoods, tool-making, communication, culture, happiness and suffering.
Progressive countries around the world have already recognized that using our closest kin as test subjects for medical experiments is unethical and immoral, and have put in place formal prohibitions on such research.

We, the undersigned, ask the Seattle City Council to enact an ordinance banning experimentation on nonhuman great apes in the city of Seattle.
