On the 1st March, 2010, leading Iranian film-maker Jafar Panahi was arrested in Tehran, Iran, under allegations of anti-governmental activities.
Invited to be part of the 63º Cannes Film Festival official jury, he couldn't attend, despite French ministers asking for his liberation and petitions being made by directors such as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.
On May 18th, during a press conference at Cannes, it was revealed Panahi went on hunger strike. We all understand that isolated complaints will not have the necessary impact to free him, but maybe cancelling this year awards could drive enough media attention to the issue.
We call on the 63º Cannes Film Festival Jury to drop this year's awards in protestation of film-maker Jafar Panahi's arrest in Iran.
