Dear Sir,

The All India MD/MS Doctors association (AIMDDA) noted with deep agony the fall in medical and dental education standards which has crept into our British legacy education system due to forcible transition of brick fresh institutions into deemed universities and many such universities are looting the public with government (politician) approval.

Extensive cover story appeared in Frontline on July 17,2009 on the decline in the Indian medical education system and the universities, appears as a sequel to submission of Prof. Yashpal committee report, created as a committee on renovation and rejuvenation of Higher education in India by the Human resources ministry India to revamp the corruption ridden Indian Universities system. Also similar story –HIGHER EDUCATION MESS-HOW TO CLEAN IT UP appeared in INDIA TODAY on July 13, 2007.

Professional bodies like Medical council of India, DCI, AICTE, are being cheated, and the opinion of professionals is neglected, as has happened during of Dr Anbumani Ramadoss’s tenure. Even Universities hoodwink or cheat the MCI and DCI hence there should be a punishment for these bodies also. There should be a international level punishment to such corrupters among the universities and such crimes on humanity should be tried at international fora.

We protest over reliance on academic councils of universities-for example they too can go wrong, do wrongs. In the latest instance, the July 2009 MBBS exams conducted by Rajiv Gandhi Health University, Bangalore were out rightly illegal. A re-exam or a proper exam malpractices enquiry should be done since we find that non medical teachers who were not accepted as medical or dental council recognized teachers by the medical /dental council of India (hence were not counted as medical teachers) were appointed as Internal examiners. Internal examiner is a very hallowed position, and we have noted certain people whose basic degree itself is unrecognized, and hence their postgraduate qualifications is also not unrecognized, were appointed examiners, contrary to all established norms.

Such gross mistakes of over reliance on unqualified MSc teachers will deprive students of quality medical education by medical faculty and such unsuitable nonMD teachers will not be able to produce doctors for the 21st century.

Yours sincerely,

President of the AIMDDA

ALL INDIA MD MS DNB DOCTORS ASSOCIATION -AN ORGANIZATION/FORUM FOR APPROPRIATE MEDICAL EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PRACTICE: OUR REQUEST FOR SYLLABI CHANGES.

Aimdda is short form for all India md ms dnb doctors association registered as an association in Karnataka, at Bangalore. Our esteemed Members believe in democratic expression of ideas for furthering professional advances in medical education and research. Medically educated seniors should be given respect, and will earn respect according to Indian tradition, as well as their ability to produce papers or stimulate researching youngsters. Seniors will be a guiding force for research, and all those years of experience good or bad cannot be deemed waste or passé. We continue to respect seniors among medical as well as non-medical teachers.

We do not hate anyone or believe in hating anyone, except that we disbelieve in allowing a equal teaching hand to MSc (Nonmedical )educated persons as we disbelieve in their ability to understand or practice concepts of medicine, surgery or specialties for the simple reason that they have not been trained in our niche areas where we excel. We do not believe their competence in our niche areas as they have not been exposed to medical problems as best as we have been .They never have been examined for clinical subjects or trained as rigorously as we have been exposed to during 5 and ½ years of our MBBS course. We feel we have greater rights to practice Medicine as we have been awarded MD degrees or DNB and diploma degrees by hard work in medical clinics and our experience cannot be comparable with MSc courses.

In India’s parallel teacher system, of allowing Msc’s to function as medical college teachers due to a artificial shortage of medical college teachers we have been aggrieved by the health ministry and medical council of India. This mismanagement has gone unquestioned and we are as an association gathering numerical strength to question the basis of allowing inefficiently trained MSc to function as medical college teachers in certain applied medical college departments, apparently in the guise of filling shortages in faculty.

Lack of participation of forming public opinion about maintaining quality medical education is a result of general corruption of ideals which has happened in Indian medical education system, and needs radical correction, originating from within the system, involving all stake holders, public, doctors, medical college managements as well as regulatory agencies like ICMR, IMA, MCI, health ministries and Doctors associations like all India md ms dnb doctors association,AMBI and similar associations. We actively seek participation of faculty in upgrading our syllabi as a first step, with the help of all stake holders, to suit national as well as international requirements in support of medical standard up gradation.

Please forward syllabus changes required in your respective subjects so that we can seek to clarify/liaise with MCI and health ministry, in all possible media so that these prime movers of medical education in India can bring about quality changes in our pre independence dated syllabi. We can seek to weed our syllabi out undesirable /old nonmedical elements .Medical education is also like a software and needs continuous up gradation, and is exposed to new challenges now and then, hence needs routine syllabi revisions. We request revisions of syllabi to help upgrade our medical ed system to global standards.
