Pensacola voters passed a referendum in September 2006 to build a Community Maritime Park with a multi-use stadium, maritime park and conference center.
Springdale, Ark. and Grand Prairie, Tex. both passed referendums for ballparks at nearly the same time. Springdale had its first game at its new ballpark this April. Grand Prairie will open its park on May 10.
Pensacola has yet to cut the grass on the park property. Community Redevelopment Agency funding has been tied up by Florida Supreme Court ruling for nearly six months.
The Pensacola City Council has stayed on the sidelines and done little to push this project along - a project that could generate 1500 jobs and revitalize downtown Pensacola.
The City Council needs to pursue alternative funding for the park and get started building it.
We, the undersigned, call on the Pensacola City Council to pursue alternative funding sources for the Vince Whibbs, Sr. Community Maritime Park.
We can't wait any longer. Our local economy needs this project.
Please build the park now.
